Palestinians Under Israeli Occupation

Americans for Middle East Understanding (AMEU) was established in 1967 shortly before the war in which Israel overtook East Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank – beginning the longest military occupation in modern history.

The story of Palestinians under Israeli occupation is one of relentless humiliation, ongoing dispossession, economic subservience, and social chaos. Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories – condemned in U.N. Resolutions and illegal under the Geneva Conventions – grew at a faster pace after the Oslo Accords than before, with the number of settlers doubling in the eight years following the Rabin-Arafat handshake on the White House lawn in 1993. Palestinian hopes for good faith negotiations and a state of their own drowned in the wake of continuing land confiscation, home demolitions, unabated settlements, more settlers, and more Jewish-only roads that fragmented Palestinian areas.

Palestinians Under Israeli Occupation in The Link

Dozens of full-length issues of AMEU’s publication, The Link, have been devoted to the Palestinians under Israeli occupation and can be found in the archives on this web site, searchable by author and subject.

Among the authors are Linda Brayer, Norman Finkelstein, James Graff, Mohammad Hallaj, Grace Halsell, Jeff Halper, Ann Lesch and Leslie Schmida.

Aspects of the Palestinians under Israeli occupation issue are covered under these subject headings (among others): civil rights, courts, demographics, Hebron, human rights, intifada, Jerusalem, land and homes, right of return, settlements, water and the West Bank/Gaza.

One of the most definitive Link issues concerning Palestinians under Israeli occupation was written in 1997 by Tom Hayes, a documentary filmmaker. For the only time in The Link’s 35-year history, we added eight pages to the usual 16 so that we wouldn’t have to cut a word Hayes had written. His article is titled, “People and the Land: Coming to a PBS Station Near You?” The documentary film is available in VHS format from AMEU.

Palestinians Under Israeli Occupation: Hebron

The city of Hebron has long been the outpost for the most ideological of the Israeli settlers. Two Link issues have been devoted exclusively to the Palestinians under Israeli occupation in Hebron: Hebron’s Theater of the Absurd,” written in 1996 by Kathleen Kern, and “Inside H-2,” written in 2001 by Jane Adas.
